The illustration with a dog carrying a torch is a conventional representation of the Dominicans, stemming from a mediaeval play on words and a tradition relating to the birth of Dominic. The latin for Dominican is “dominicanus”, which became “domini canis”, meaning “dog of the Lord”. It is said that Dominic’s mother dreamed of giving birth to a dog carrying a torch in its mouth that, “seemed to set the earth on fire”.
